The Story of Legong Dance

Bali is well known to the whole world as a paradise on earth. The beautiful scenery, the beaches and the mountains are not the only main attraction. Bali is also known for the tradition. People in Bali still do rituals in their daily life. They have tens of traditional dances, ceremony, clothes, music instruments and others. Bali really is a paradise on earth, an exotic island rich in culture.

Amongst all, Legong, has become one of the most famous traditional dance in Bali. This dance is often put in a show as a way to attract tourists. But, just like any other traditional dances, Legong also has some stories behind it. A story that tells who started the dance, who created it and the how to choose the dancer and why them.

The story of the birth of the legong is started in early nineteenth century. A prince in Sukawati was in a coma condition caused by his ill. In his coma he saw two beautiful nymphs dancing a feminine and delicate dance. Not only he saw the dance, he heard the sound of music that accompanying it as well. Struck by the mysterious and beautiful sight and sound, later after his health revival, together with artists of the village, he transformed his imagination into reality. So, born the Legong, another performing arts form, as a gentle touch of the arts to the already arts fertile island.

At first legong, as well as other dances at the time, allows only male dancers. Many decades later, female dancers take place, brought Legong dance to the new height as we see today. Girls from the age of five aspire to be selected to represent the community as Legong dancers. Only the most beautiful will be chosen to dance and representing the nymphs as seen in the dream.

Legong is usually performed in a stage called Kalangan. This is an open space with a kind of horse shoe half circle created by the spectators. With a big tree, usually an enormous banyan tree overshadows the stage, and an elevated beautiful carved candi bentar gate as the back drop, from where the dancers emerge, the stage is complete. Watching legong performance in such a place under moonlight at night is quite an experience, for some, this also means a revelation.

Balinese Cock Fighting

Bali, besides known for the nature beauty, is also known for the culture and tradition that color the people’s daily life. One of the most popular traditions in Bali is cockfighting. Cockfighting is a very old traditional in Bali. Cockfights have a ceremonial purpose of ritually spilling blood, an important pacification of the demons that escorts Hindu temple festivals. In fact, cockfight is required, not just allowed at every Balinese temple festival or religious ceremony. The blood is an offering to the hungry forces of evil, the butas and kalas.

The cock that is used in this cockfighting is treated specially. They are fondled, massaged, plucked, bathed, deloused, and fed the choicest mixtures of corn, rice, egg, and proprietary strength-building ingredients. It is said that a mixture of chopped grilled meat and jack-fruit leaves thickens the blood and prevents serious bleeding when injury results on the fight.

Most cockfights begin in the afternoon. Only the larger temples have morning starts. It will be very festive during the event. Ladies set up stands and sell many things ranging from fruit, rice cakes, sate, and shaved ice with sweet, brightly colored syrups. Men play cards and shoot dice. But today, vendors sell plastic buckets, photographs, calendars, stuffed animals, and toys for kids.

The ceremony starts when the cocks are brought to the arena in small, flexible bamboo cages. The cages are lined up around the edge of the arena, inside the barricade, and their handlers’ squat behind them. Then a white-clad priest advances to the center of the arena and presents offerings on the ground to the butas and kalas, chanting over them, ringing his bell over them, and finally pouring rice wine on the ground. Then he makes similar offerings to the gods in a shrine built up off the ground at a corner of the arena. Blood is on the way.

The ceremony ends when it has already three rounds. But the crowds will not just stop there. The males will just be there chatting about the match or anything else. This traditional ceremony is now rarely met. But if you interested to see, you can ask some local people to take you to villages that still run this ceremony.

Bali diving

Bali diving. With its warm water, extensive coral reefs and abundant marine life, diving in Bali offers some superb diving possibilities. There are a number of operations conducting diving trips for visitors, and there are also package tours specifically for scuba divers. If you are traveling independently, and you just want the occasional dive, make sure you bring your scuba certification. Most of the main qualifications are recognized, including those of PADI, NAUI, BSAC, FAUI and SSI. Keen divers might also bring their own mask and regulator, though all the equipment is available for rent.

Scuba Diving in Bali, Indonesia is amongst the best in the world and this is still relatively unknown news. Enthusiastic divers heading for Sulawesi, Monado, Flores, Sumba, why not dive for a day or two in a scuba divers heaven, Bali, Indonesia.

Dive sites in Bali

Menjangan Island / West Bali

West Bali dive sites typically offer pristine waters, colourful marine life and milder conditions suitable for divers of all levels. Divers who enjoy wall diving will appreciate the areas prime spots around Menjangan islands, but there is interest for every one here, with a deep wreck dive, some unique night diving and many snorkelling sites.

Most of the regents dive sites are found around Menjanan island. Diving is regulated here. Spear fishing is not allowed and all marine life is protected.

Menjangan' s white sandy beaches make a nice location to break for lunch. Underwater, the drop-off along the south shore and eastern tip, facing the Bali Sea, are home to lots of colourful small fish and vertebrates, lacy sea fans and a variety of sponges. The sandy, gradual slopes of Menjangan' s north coast is a final resting place for Bali' s oldest dive able shipwreck, the Anker Wreck. Even large pelagics are sometimes seen at Menjangan. Occasionally sightings of Whales, Whale sharks and Manta rays have been reported. Drift diving is usual, but currents are quite mild and all levels of divers can enjoy this area.

The northwest area has had his share of destructions. El Nino, storms have been hard on the corals. The marine life however is teaming and vibrant.

Tulamben

Day-trippers travelling from Sanur to the east Bali dive locations of Tulamben and Amed will get a look at our traditional Bali. The drive is approx. 3 hours. Diving in Tulamben is normally done from shore, where entry can be challenging.

Many people prefer to stay overnight in Tulamben rather than day trip here. The local people are very friendly and Bali International Diving Professionals both support and know the local community. We have been diving in this area before it became developed as a popular dive destination. By diving in Tulamben you are also supporting the local community. Only in Tulamben will you see young and old women alike carrying diving equipment on their heads, to the dive entry points, to earn their living.

Amed

Amed and the villages south east of this area are becoming more popular with tourists. Life goes back in time here. For most of the year, the water is generally calm, most of the year, with minimal to manageable currents. Many sites make excellent drift dives.

Central Coast

The sound of crashing surf on the shores is a part of the Oceanside feel, and the dive sites are part of the seascape. The imposing Gili Tepekong and the four outcrops of Gili Mimpang are directly offshore. Consistent currents flow with the full and varied marine life along the shallow reefs and walls that surround these mysterious islands.

Padang Bai, is a small, busy fishing village. Its sandy bay a convenient haunt for divers. The reefs around Padang Bai have white-sand bottoms and can be magical if the visibility is good. This is not always the case. When the channel is calm you can do a daytrip from Padang Bai to the reefs of Nusa Penida.

Gili Biaha or Ikuan, is a rocky outcrop just of Tanjung Bias Putih. Bias Putih point is a few meters north-west of Gili Tepekong. The west side is mainly chosen for diving as it is more sheltered from current and offers better diving conditions.

Nusa Penida

There are 3 islands here, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan & Nusa Ceningan. These are located off Bali's southeast coast.

Sanur

It has been said that diving in Sanur is a waste of time, however, Bali International Diving Professionals have seen wonderful small creatures like the seahorse and mantis shrimp in this area. We feel that this is a good dive location for novice divers and refresher course participants and for those who do not have much time. The minute marine life and coral formations make this an interesting, as well as a convenient, dive site. Sanur certainly doesn’t offer Bali’s best diving, but if you want a quick and easy dive this is the place to visit.

The Elephant Safari Park offers a new concept in Eco tourism. Here you can enjoy the exciting adventure of Elephant Trekking while you are also helping to save the endangered Indonesian Elephant (one of world's rarest elephants). Currently there are less than 1,100 Indonesian Elephants left in the wild and their numbers are rapidly decreasing. At the Elephant Safari Park we are assisting, through proceeds from admissions, with the relocation of wild elephants to special reserves set up by the Indonesian Government to assist with breeding programs to help build up the depleting numbers.

Eye Spy

  • An elephant has long eyelashes and lots of folds in their eyelids, which hamper their vision. They don't turn their head much so their view of the world is quite narrow.

  • Elephants cannot see in colour nor can they focus properly, which makes our painting elephants even more remarkable.

  • They do however see silhouettes and faded green blue hues.

  • Their eyesight isn't a handicap though as 60% of their brain is dedicated to sense of smell.

Trunk Tactics

  • The elephant's trunk is controlled by an astonishing 50,000 muscles - the most gargantuan and versatile limb in nature.

  • Originally a deep-sea beast they used their nasal appendages as snorkels!

  • Their trunks are the most powerful known natural siphon with bristles attached to every single nerve.

  • Elephants use their trunks to hold hands with their friends and are highly tactile and social animals.

  • Their trunks are more versatile than the human hand!

  • The trunk never stays still and can extend, twist and turn in any direction.

  • It takes 2 years for an elephant's trunk to become proficient in use.

  • When the trunk is held high an elephant is alert and interested.

  • Elephant's tusks are actually their incisors or cutting teeth and each tooth is about the size of a football weighing in at about 4.5kg each!

Creature Features
  • Elephant's leg creases have their own unique identification - just like fingerprints identify humans.

  • An elephant also crosses its legs - just like humans do when relaxing.

  • An elephant's brain is approx 3 times the size of a human brain - their temporal lobes are large and well developed and they have remarkable memories.

  • Elephants communicate via low infrasound using 30 different infrasonic sounds to 'talk' with each other - these infrasounds are much too low for the human ear to distinguish

Batukaru Temple

Pura Luhur Batukaru, a unique sacred mountain sanctuary and royal temple of Tabanan dynasty, situated on the foot of mount Batukaru, 23 km north of Tabanan, built to venerate deities of mountains and lake.

Based on the scripture, the temple was founded in 11th century by Empu Kuturan, a great Hindu sage who established six main temple of Bali. At that time, this temple was a sanctuary for hermits. In 1604, the temple was attacked and partially destroyed by the king of Buleleng, Anglurah Panji Sakti, but his troops were beaten back by millions of bees unleashed by the protective spirit of the temple. Pura Luhur Batukaru was not rebuilt until 1959, even though pilgrims had continued to worship in rubble.

The Pura Luhur Batukaru lies in solitary clearing 1,300 m above the sea level, set amidst a garden of flowering frangipani and hibiscus, with a gigantic, inhabited, humid tropical forest all around it. The site is often cool and has highest rainfall on Bali. the temple complex consists of a main enclosure to the north and two smaller complexes tucked away in the forest.

Within the complex are a number of symbolically distinct shrines, each representing a different Tabanan dynasty. Due to the cool climate and high rainfall, the shrines in this temple are covered by moss. The Pura Luhur is also known as Pura Taman that means it has a bathing place and maintained by a king. The most magnificent shrine in this temple is seven-tiered meru, dedicated to the God Mahadewa who presides over mount Batukaru.

A few meters east of the temple are steps leading down to a square artificial pool with a miniature of island in the middle. On the isle, there are two shrines, one dedicated to Mount Batukaru and other for the deities of the lake. Nearby are a small temple and a sacred spring, bubbling up from a riverbank.

The temple anniversary falls on Manis Galungan, a day after Galungan holyday. On that day thousand of pilgrims from all over the island will flock to the temple to pay homage to the deities in this sacred temple.

Pedanda: The High Priest of Bali

Pedanda or Peranda, the brahmana high priest of Bali, is a special man who have a right and ability to perform and officiate a religious ceremony, serves as a bridge between God and mortal.

To become a pedanda one has to be born in a Brahmana family, the office of pedanda is usually passed down from father to son of his choice; there is an intensive training from a qualified teacher known as nabe and a spiritual preparation required for the position. There is generally only one pedanda in a large extended family of Brahmanas, and the rest of family do ordinary labor as farmers, artisans, teachers, clerks, merchants, or even day laborers.

pedanda bali high priest
The pedanda’s life is strictly regimented and full of prohibitions in order to keep his holiness. He should dedicate his entire life to the meditation, the study of theology, and the practice of the ritual.

Although there are many prohibitions that have to be observed, the pedanda do not observe sexual abstinence as recommended in the scriptures. Ancestry is one of his greatest concerns, and a standing of the various brahmanic families is determined by the purity of lineage. A pedanda marries, generally once, a woman of his own caste (brahmana), who becomes automatically a priestess, who must help her husband in the ritual and who may herself officiates a ceremony in a certain occasion.
pedanda bali high priest
The pedanda still exert a powerful influence on Balinese life despite the fact that his relation with the people is never intimate. Most of the Balinese families has an inherited relationship with particular peranda, from whom they obtain holy water, various specially prepared offering and ritual, advice on finding an auspicious day for a religious ceremony or general moral tutelage. The Balinese term for this relationship is “siwa” for the priest and “sisia” for his follower, mean “teacher” or “preceptor” and “student” or “follower”. But as a matter of fact, for most Balinese the tie to a priest is not a “student-follower” but rather “client”, for their dependence on the priest is almost utilitarian. The pedanda is the source of holy water for ceremonies and reciter of holiest prayer.

Bali Holiday - Best Value in the Pacific

Planning your Bali Holiday

One of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations is Bali. Holidays in Bali represent good value and an interesting visual, culinary and cultural experience. East to west, the island is approximately 153 km wide and 112 km north to south (95 by 69 miles, respectively), with a surface area of 5,632 km².
The highest point is Mount Agung at 3,142 m (10,308 feet) high, an active volcano that last erupted in March 1963. Mountains cover centre to the eastern side, with Mount Agung the easternmost peak. Mount Batur (1,717 m) is also still active. About 30,000 years ago it experienced a catastrophic eruption — one of the largest known volcanic events on Earth.

Indonesia holiday homes

Indonesia holiday homes

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago. Situated in South East Asia, it consists of 18,000 tropical islands, about a third of which are inhabited. There is a wide variation in the flora across the islands, although colourful and tropical are common themes. Ornamental sculptures and garden art are popular. The Indonesians specialise in 2 types of garden - water gardens (taman air) and small gardens (taman mini).
The official language is Bahasa Indonesia, which is based on Malay. Many local dialects, English and Dutch are also spoken.

Bali

With its beaches, lush tropical forests, rivers, volcanoes and crater lakes, the natural landscape on Bali is beautiful. The land is very fertile and flowers are omnipresent. The climate is pleasant year-round. Traditionally, the Balinese live in a collection of pavillions within a walled compound called a pekarangan. Each paviliion has a specific function. Balinese architecture is based on the concept of Tri Angga. The gardens of the water palace Tirta Gangga are interesting. The famous tropical garden designer Made Wijaya lives on Bali and has made many gardens on the island.

Java

Java is densely populated. Indonesia's bustling capital city, Jakarta, is on Java.

Bungy jumping

No Bali experience is complete without a Bungy Jump from our magnificent tower. Hands down this jump spot is the most dramatic in the world. Situated inside the grounds of the famous Double Six Night Club. The 45m / 150ft tower was purpose built and includes an elevator to get to the top (so you can’t use the stairs as an excuse not to jump or check out the view!).
There are three options to jump, during the afternoon for amazing views out over the beaches and surf. Or sunset for the most picture perfect bungy photo you will ever get, or in the dark as you party away around the tower!
We offer a range of different jump styles including riding off the roof on a BMX push bike or even a real motorcycle it’s our little tribute to the master “Evil Knievel”!

Bali is an Indonesian Island Paradise

The girls of Bali are remarkably beautiful, and their lovely tanned and toned skin and large, almond-shaped eyes, together with their happy disposition, makes for a girl who is a joy to see and a delight to know.

The word Bali is synonymous with the idea of a tropical paradise in most people's minds--and truly Bali is a paradise--indeed a tropical Shangri-la of sorts.

Bali is just one of some seventeen-thousand islands of which only six-thousand are inhabited. Bali is found in the archipelago that constitute the country of Indonesia. It is some ninety-miles in length and is located east of the island of Java and just west of Lombok.

The most populous Muslim nation, Indonesia boasts some two-hundred and thirty million citizens and of note is that most of Bali's three-million refer to themselves as Hindu. It is true that most of the islands that go to make up Indonesia are exceedingly beautiful, Bali is especially attractive.

For one thing, a large percentage of the island is encircled by exquisite beaches with clear, blue water. Mount Agung is an active volcano, and it towers ten-thousand feet above the island. Sacred Hindu temples are seen dotting the landscape and the delight to farmers is the fertile soil, allowing for numerous green rice paddies.

Bali is unique in it's cultural traditions. The village of Ubud,is known for it's woodcarving, batik-making and colorful painting. And of course everyone is familiar with Balinese dance and Gamelan music, both have been featured in many movies over the years. There really is only one Bali, and one Bali-girl. Unique in every sense of the word.
